Something you may not know about carbide end mills.

Do you think you are very familiar with carbide endmills? And to know how to use it suitably and correctly? This article will give you a new understanding of end mills.

  • Compared with end milling cutters, corner radius end mills have R angle protection strength and are not easy to chip. And by comparison with ball nose cutters, it has a larger cutting ratio in the axial direction under the same strength. It will not be affected by the difference in the position of the contacting workpiece, which will cause the cutting speed and the degree of tool wear different.
  • The purpose of the roughing end mills: it is used for large margin cutting and rough machining. It is recommended to use when the margin is uneven. The corrugated cutting edge has R angle protection to prevent the tool from chipping. At the same time, it has better chip removal performance.
  • Two-edged milling cutter: it is dedicated to keyway machining. Since such machining requires better chip removal, reducing the number of teeth can improve chip removal performance. At the same time, it also has the function of punching small batches and small amounts of processing. But for large-volume hole machining, we recommend to use drills considering tool's life and processing efficiency.
  • Ball nose end mills: during the cnc machining process, the ball end mills' center always remains stationary, and the contact part between the center and the workpiece is not milled but ground, so the center part of the ball knife blade is easier to wear. When processing flat workpieces, the processing surface of the ball knife is rougher, so it is not suitable. The use of a ball knife can obtain a more stable processing state. The cutting angle is continuously changing and there is almost no sudden change. In this way, the change of the cutting force is a continuous change process. The cutting state is more stable and the surface finish is better. Generally, it is used in semi-finish milling and finish milling. A four flute ball nose cutters can be used for roughening of more complex curved surfaces.
  • Sharp corner protection of the milling cutter: when you need to clean the root, use the tool without sharp corner protection, but it is easy to chip. The tool with sharp corner protection is stronger and has a longer service life. It is a commonly used tool in the application. Customers who need to clean the root should to use the tool without the tip protection type.
  • Milling cutters passivation: Passivation can effectively eliminate these onlookers and the cutting edge is smoother. After passivation treatment, the cutting tool can effectively improve the cutting edge strength, tool life and stability in the cutting process.
  • Why vibrate the knife? The cutters' form and material, workpiece, cutting parameters and path and the workpiece clamping effect all will cause vibration.
  • How to solve the vibration knife?
  • A. Use a tool with a fillet radius smaller than the corner radius (for small workpieces).

    B. The tool path is rounded.

    C. Through arc interpolation, around corner radius that is slightly larger than the drawing requirements is generated, and the remaining machining allowance at the corner can be fixed with a smaller tool for milling or arc interpolation cutting.

    D. When the surface is relatively simple, you can use the spiral feed of contour processing.

    E. Reducing tool holding overhang length, lowering the cutting speed and feed rate, cutting tool amount, reduce the feed rate at the corner.

That's all, hope through the file you can have a deeper knowledge about the end mill bits. Which can greatly improve your working efficiency.
